I have had a rather “exciting” 2023 so far. I only say that with mild sarcasm, as the changes have been necessary and unavoidable.
Most recently I accepted a new contract position that will take me away from home, and into a new sector – government. I am very excited about the opportunity, as it allows me to gain relevant experience in arboriculture/horticulture while putting me in the middle of a massive and remote government owned park.
The position comes with subsidized housing, and the other standard benefits associated with government employment. When asked what I needed to bring the hiring manager replied “very little.” A camping cot is what most people use for a bed, a place setting, pot, pan, and camping gear. The agency provides uniforms, so minimal off duty clothing, and that is it. Groceries can be acquired on site, although I believe that an occasional trip to the nearest centre might reduce costs. The only large ticket item I need is steel toe boots (more on this later).
The prospect of being in a remote location, working out doors and away from the stress of my urban life is a real blessing at this point in my journey. I really need some time away, and I also desperately need a paycheck, so this opportunity is just about the best thing that could have happened. To be sure, working in the north can have its challenges, but I am looking forewords to it.
Not only will this be an opportunity to absorb the rejuvenating power of the great outdoors, but I am hoping that it will also provide time to resume the tree project, which was meant to be an ongoing study of indigenous trees. There is access to internet, and with shifts being standard Monday – Friday 8 hour days, I see no reason why I cannot continue posting here. The only possible complication might be the temptation to spend my free time hiking and recreating outdoors.
I did consider taking time away from social media over the summer, but I am not quite sure that the benefit outweighs the cost. I will need to have a phone, and with that comes access. I like the idea of a total break from modernity, but I have to ask if that serves my greater goals.
The last thing to note is that I am unsure about gardening this summer. Perhaps there will be space around my residence, but if not I will try to find a suitable alternative until I am settled once more.
