About a decade ago I first learned that it is possible to book passage on cargo ships. I discovered this when researching ways to reduce my carbon footprint while covering vast intercontinental distances.
I found the idea appealing for a few reasons. I enjoy the sea, and I like the feelings and sounds of being in motion. Train, planes and automobiles are all enjoyable places for me to be. I even consider them meditative in some ways.
Adding to this, I truly dislike rapid transit across multiple time zones. I have a highly tuned nervous system, and jet lag is pretty hard on me. When people claim that it takes a few days to adjust I just shake my head. Not this guy.
I also believe in the concept of slow travel. What could be slower than a cargo ship traveling across the Atlantic. Actual travel time varies, but I would expect to be at sea for about two weeks. Can you imagine two weeks in a private cabin, with your meals prepared and no internet to distract you? Just the purr of the engines, the smell of the sea, and limitless vistas in all directions. I know, heavenly right?
I could take a cargo ship across the Atlantic for the first time. Or maybe even a slow boat to China.
