Many years ago I obtained my SCUBA certification through the PADI organization. Since then I have been fortunate to dive some really incredible spots. Roatan, an Island off the coast of Honduras was the place that I obtained my open water certification. It was a little rough around the edges, but the diving really was world class.
There have been other great experiences since. Lava tubes off of Saint Maarten, and cave diving in the Yucatan Peninsula were also extraordinary. There were also a few less than stellar experiences that slightly soured me on the entire scene.
What does this have to do with the biggest risk? Well, one of the places I have always been interested in diving is the Red Sea. This is not to say that diving in the Red Sea is inherently risky – it is not. The risk has more to do with the global political situation.
As I prepare to go abroad again I am revisiting my “bucket list”. Diving the Red Sea was buried a ways down, but it is still in there, smoldering away. Maybe 2025 will be the year!?!
