In the moment of unfolding it can be hard to know the true significance of most events. Only through posterity can we fully understand the long term significance of anything.
Maybe the first major news event I recall is the Exxon Valdez. It happened in 1989. It is the same year that the Berlin Wall fell, which marks my emerging awareness of global events.
I recall the rise of terrorism and the fall of apartheid. I have born witness to conquest, war, famine and death on a scale that was impossible even a century ago.
I recall the birth of the world wide web. The funny thing about the web is that there was very little hype. It unassumingly slid into our lives gradually, and then exploded into a global necessity.
If I had to choose one significant event that happened during my lifetime, it would be this. Like the development of writing, or the printing press that followed, I believe the world wide web changed everything.
Now get out there and touch some grass! Better yet, hug a tree!!
Stay Wild friends!
