Saving money, minimizing cost, bargain hunting, whatever you call this proclivity, I am guilty of it. I would not say that being frugal is a core driving value, but it has become increasingly central to everything I do.
I have been financially responsible for a long time, but around 2015 I really began to see saving money as a sort of mini-game that I could overlay onto almost everything I do.
As previously mentioned, I developed allot of travel habits that have served me well, and I am in the process of reviewing them in preparation for an upcoming trip. Included are a number of websites that either provide travel hacks, or help me to save money on basic necessities – all of which ultimately provide savings.
First up is skyscanner. There are lots of sites offering budget airline tickets, but skyscanner is my old faithful. Used in conjunction with an understanding of travel hubs and global connection points it can save you thousands of dollars. It often means longer transits, and less comforts, but if you are trying to stretch those travel bucks its a tradeoff worth considering.
Next up booking.com. Again, lots of sites offer deals on booking hostels and hotels, but generally I found booking.com to be my favorite. That said, in recent years I have begun to use airbnb more and more. It is especially useful for long term stays, something that appeals to those seeking slow travel experiences. There is also the alternative VRBO, but I do not have direct experience with this site yet.
Reddit is another resource that I access when I need to learn about a specific subject. There are several reddit communities that have helped me immensely. Recently I have been spending time in the travel communities there, like r/onebag and r/solotravel. These indirectly save me money by helping me find efficiencies and best practices.
Last but not least is wordpress.com. I can say with confidence that wordpress.com is one of the best platforms I have personally used. The tech works and the community is top notch. So happy to be here with you all.
I will end with a quote on the subject of saving money:
“By sowing frugality we reap liberty, a golden harvest.” – Agesilaus
Until next time, stay wild!
