My father. There is much that I can say about him, and how his character shaped the man that I have become. I think of him often, and I am very happy for the time that we had together.
How can you describe a person and their life in its entirety. There are so many subtleties to the human personality, and not all of them are good. We all have our burdens to bear, and demons to fight. Some of us are consumed by our struggles, weighed down and turned into something less by the hardships we endure.
Not my father.
Despite a life filled with adversity he maintained a core of decency and good. This goodness was not compelled, or part of some obligation he felt, it was simply who he was. The world did everything it could to break him down. It filled his life with misfortune, injustice, and a multitude of sufferings. None of it changed the fundamental nature of his being.
I would say that my father was honest to a fault. He was kind, most of all to those who deserved kindness. He was creative, innovative, and he demonstrated to everyone the essence of hard work. He took care of his responsibilities, and was always there to help. His skills and talents were sought after by his family, friends and community. Generosity for him was not a bargaining chip, but a reward for his own successes.
I am grateful that I was there for him in the final hours. I hope with all my heart that he has found the peace and comfort so often absent in his time on earth.
