I once more find myself in a situation where I need to assemble a list of essential items for travel. I have done this before, but now it is a little different.
In the past I have been a strong proponent of one bag travel. I still am, but as of writing the airlines seem to have come to an informal agreement. They want more money from us. To get more, they seem determined to make us pay more for luggage.
To be fair, if you are going on a vacation for a couple weeks this might not affect you. Its targeted more at the long term traveler, and those who equate paying less for tickets to more time abroad. Either way, I find myself wondering if I can manage with only a personal sized item for my travel.
What is a personal sized item you ask? Well, it depends on the airline, but we are talking about something that is about this size:
41 cm x 15 cm x 33 cm
(16 in. x 6 in. x 13 in.)
Not all that big when the projected trip length may exceed three months. Of course I did check the cost to purchase a carry on item. In all cases the asking price of a carry on was in excess of $200. This felt like allot for something that used to be free. Then there is the fine print. More predatory practices designed to trick you into purchasing a ticket, and then nailing you with extra expenses at the gate.
So, I have been trying to figure out what exactly I need to get by. Most things can be purchased as needed, and excess items can always be donated to charity. I suppose a bit of tech, and a couple changes of clothes would figuratively (and literally) keep me covered.
Assuming I don’t go off and do anything too crazy π
