A while back I came to a crossroad in my life. I realized that I was unwilling to endure winter in the Canadian sub arctic any longer. Before me was a choice: either move to a warmer climate, or find a way to spend my winters abroad.
Having traveled extensively I have seen first hand the problems associated with being an expat. As such, I chose first to move to Victoria British Columbia. Victoria enjoys the best climate in Canada, and is honestly one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I truly dig the Pacific North West, and being on Vancouver Island was a dream. It had (almost) all the things that I love most about Canada.
Unfortunately, the reality of Canada right now is one of economic crisis. After roughly a year on the Island I concluded that there was no future for me there. At least not as a single income household. I decided to return to my home province and explore my other options.
The timing was quite good, as family was in need of some assistance. It is always nice when you can create a situation where everyone wins. I was able to reconnect with loved ones, help out during a difficult time, and work on my own plans concurrently.
Slowly over the intervening months I have shaped the idea into a plan. After enjoying an excellent Christmas and New Years with family and friends I made my play. I picked up a one way ticket to a destination in the southern hemisphere and began to plan.
Looking ahead
It is my intention to continue blogging here about my experience as a digital nomad. As an aside I noted that the word digital nomad seems to have replaced an old term – road warrior. This still makes me chuckle as I remember the 80’s Mad Max franchise.

With all confidence I can say that I gave Canada an honest shot. I lived and worked in a dream location for roughly a year. Even with a very good career, the economics just made no sense. I do hope that things in Canada will improve over time. If they do, the Pacific North West is still my first choice for a good life.
Until next time,
