As I write this I am 50 hours into a fast. By this I mean I have had no caloric intake for 50 hours. Just water and a little black coffee.
Day one was no problem, but after that first 24 hours it starts to get rough for me. Generally I get a headache, and some mild flu-like symptoms. There is of course hunger, and lethargy.
Mentally things seem to be different every time. As much as the physical symptoms can be difficult, its the mental aspect that is the true struggle.
For example, today I had to go out and do some errands. The car was low on fuel so I stopped and filled it up. When I went inside to pay, the cashier informed me that I qualified for their special promotion. She handed me a coupon for a free burger from the restaurant across the street. I had to laugh at the irony.
I took a very long look at the delicious burger on that coupon. My mind instantly whispered to me “Its fate/God/universe telling you to eat!” I chuckled to myself and smiled at the teller. “I am sooo hungry, and this looks amazing.” She smiled and laughed before wishing me a nice day.
I really did consider driving across the street to get my free burger, but willpower won out. Some tests are more difficult than others, and my mind state will often dictate when or if I fold.
What helps me keep on track with my fast is the knowledge I have accumulated about best practices. I have some understanding of autophagy and the time required to engage our bodies healing and regenerative functions. I personally like to fast a minimum of 24 hours, and usually max out at about 72 hours.
Of course I am not a medical professional, and I am in no way suggesting that anyone try this type of fasting. If you do want to fast it is your responsibility to consult the appropriate experts and medical professionals.
I have decided that I will end this fast tomorrow. I always break a fast with a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice. After that the real fun begins. What would your first meal me after a 72 hour water fast?
Tonight we dream a feast!
