The International Life

Daily writing prompt
Is there an age or year of your life you would re-live?

Lately I have been thinking about a period of time in 2014-2015 when I was traveling internationally. It was a period in my life when I had purpose, and was passionate about all the things that I was doing. Everywhere I went doors opened for me, and I was blessed with so many incredible experiences.

Since that time the world has changed, and I have changed with it. I do not seek to return to the person I was, or the world that existed at that time, but I do remember it fondly.

Practically speaking I am drawn to this time for another reason. I am once more preparing to travel internationally, and so it only makes sense that I revisit lessons learned. This means reviewing what was good and what was not so good about my past choices.

If I were to sum up my underlying philosophy from that time it would be something like this: take nothing but memories, leave nothing but friends. I took cues from the “leave no trace” movement, but on an international scale. If I were to cast my personal ethos in opposition to another travel philosophy, then I would say it stands in contrast to the ideas put forth by Kerouac in “On the Road”.

Beyond constructing some guidelines to how I will travel in the world, I am also reviewing gear lists, and learning about new advances in technology that might make my life abroad easier, or more comfortable. Of course, all the things I carry will have to fit into a single carry on bag – which certainly leads to efficiencies.

Stay Wild!
