I struggled with the rigid and orderly nature of early education. I found it oppressive, and impossible to focus. I did not enjoy sports, so art class is where I found my place. I was also very good at sculpting which helped. The art room became my sanctuary as a teenager in a strange city. I will always remember it fondly.
The more correct answer is probably human geography. It is the field in which I eventually earned a degree. It was the discipline of human geography and planning that really caught my attention, and which inspired me. I learned to consider the big picture. The focus was on the interconnection of complex systems, and multidisciplinary thinking. This stood in contrast to the micro oriented isolationist approach of most formal science of the day.
There is a clear disconnect between my interest in human built systems, and the desire to remove myself from urnban life. This is something that merits further reflection.
