Lest We Forget

Daily writing prompt
Who is the most famous or infamous person you have ever met?

I first want to take a moment to remember our veterans.

One of the most important and exemplary people in my life was a veteran of the second world war. He did not speak of glory, but of duty. He taught me to think for myself, to question authority, and to be a man. To this day his military record is sealed, and I have found no information in my searches.

There is the pictures of his flight class graduation. There were some metals, but they seem to have gone with my father in his passing. Then there are the memories, of which I am one of the last keepers.

Hours spent at the dinner table listening to stories about the war. One summer he showed me where he had been hit. Three scars on his leg where the machine gun rounds penetrated the cockpit of his spitfire. And there was the missing piece of his right ear, where an enemy Luger round nearly ended it.

Doc was the most impressive person I have ever met. He was not famous, nor infamous… just an incredible man, who lived an amazing life. Tuff and gruff as they come, but with a heart of pure gold. After the war he finished his medical doctorate. He then spent the rest of his working years as a surgeon and physician.

As far as fame, I think the most famous/infamous person I have ever met is probably David Suzuki.
