The Dream

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

This is a very hard question for me to answer. I would very much like to live someplace else, but the world is not as open as it once was. Neither am I for that matter. The older I get the less I want to take on the challenges of a foreign language/culture.

My current dream is to have a piece of land in the pacific north west. It would sit on (or near) a fiber optic backbone. This would provide access to the larger world, while allowing me to remove myself from the hectic urban life.

The land would be close to the ocean, but at significant elevation so as to avoid coastal erosion and events like tsunamis and tidal surges. Generally speaking, at least 30 meters above sea level. There would be a river running through the land, and it would be forested.

I would of course have a house. The house would be concrete. My choice of concrete is a response to the shameful trend of disposable housing that has become the norm in my home country. While concrete has its associated environmental costs, if done properly it can last thousands of years. What better legacy can one leave?

The land would have rich soil, upon which I would garden and produce food. It would also have a greenhouse, root cellar, and maybe even a pasture for a horse or a couple goats. It would be accessible either by road, or by regular ferry passage.

Community would not be too far away. Although I like quiet and access to nature, people are still an essential part of a good and happy life. Maybe there would be a guest house where I would entertain other world travelers as a bed and breakfast host.

Its a good dream. In the meantime, I will continue my semi-nomadic life. It is more grounded given the economic realities.
