If you grew up with tabletop role playing games like I did you will probably know the term “critical fail.”
In the context of this story it refers to the role of a twenty sided dice. But more on that in a moment.
The last big risk I took was relatively recent. I chose to go to Colombia for ten weeks. I wanted to learn more about the nation, and to work on a book while there. This would be my first trip to South America, and I had no idea what to expect.
Just before departing I went to visit a cousin who I have been close with since childhood. He is a few years older than me, and a dedicated gamer. Growing up he introduced me to a variety of games, and we often remissness about those youthful times.
On this particular day he had something to show me. While sorting through some dusty boxes he had uncovered a bag of old game dice. During coffee he poured the contents of the aged dice bag over the table for me to see. I marveled at the many hued, gem like polyhedrals. “These bring back memories” I commented.
One dice in particular twigged my memory. Picking up a green d20 I said. “This was your lucky d20 wasnt it?” He answered in affirmation. After a moment I smiled and said “For success on my upcoming trip to Colombia!” I then rolled the dice, watching it skip and bump over the table.
We both gasped slightly as it came to rest on a single digit – 1.
“Oh no” I said. “Critical fail” he affirmed in a hushed tone. Then we both burst out laughing. “Well, that does not bode well” I said, shaking my head. “Yea” he agreed, still chuckling. “We both know its skill not luck that makes you successful” he added after a moment. I agreed, still enjoying the moment of light-hearted humor.
In the end the dice roll meant nothing. The trip was a resounding success. The risk was worth it. I met amazing people, visited picturesque spots, and came home with fond memories. My only regret is that I could not stay longer.
Stay Wild!
